Go Fourth and Declare Your Independence from Original Ideas

Now that the barbecues and fireworks are past, I’d like to reflect on a personal Fourth of July¬†tradition: checking my inbox for terrible email marketing headlines. For some reason, Independence Day has turned into Terrible Pun Day for email marketers everywhere.

Second only to Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you) in my opinion, July 4th is full of subject lines that may have been creative once, but are as used as a 1990 Volvo 240DL. So we asked our marketing team to delve in to the jungles of their SPAM folders and pick out the most cringe-worthy headlines. Here they are, in all their glory.

1. Go Fourth and…

2. Red, White, and…

3. Declare Your Independence From…

4. That’s a Weird Thing to Celebrate With…

5. And the Bad Pun Hall of Fame…

So please, marketers, I implore you to think before you pun. If the play on words was that obvious to you, it was that obvious to everyone else. And if that’s not reason enough, think of how disappointed the Founding Fathers would be. Especially that one that looks like James van der Beek.
