Google 411 – The Greatest Invention Since Sliced Bread?

Google’s newest free service is really useful and can save you some money.  Google 411 (or “Goog 411”) launched a while ago in “experimental” mode, and within the last few weeks the full version launched.

Google 411 is an free phone-based directory assistance tool, and it essentially replaces the need to dial 411 and pay $1.50 for the call.  To use Google 411, dial 1-800-466-4411 (a.k.a. 800-GOOG-411).  The system uses advanced voice recognition technology.  It will ask you the city and state you are wanting to find a business listing in, and then it will ask the name of the business you are trying to call.  With about 90% accuracy (my estimate), it will find the listing you are looking for and directly connect you to the business with no further dialing necessary.  Best of all, it’s free!

Google likes to get their hands in everything, don’t they?  In this case, I’m glad they did!
