What's an Exabyte?

1 billion Gigabytes.  That is 1 with 18 zeros after it.  1,000,000,000,000,000,000!  Seems like an overwhelmingly large number doesn’t it?  Well not any more.  IDC with the help of EMC have undertaken the task of finding out just how much digital data is out there.  And guess what?  Its in the Exabytes.  About 281 and growing very quickly. Bellow is a ticker of just the new data created or replicated since the beginning of THIS YEAR!

EMC has a cool little flash app that you can download and estimate your own digital foot print.  And with it all sorts of privacy issues come to mind.  I’m at 11GB.  Apparently there is twice this related to me I don’t even know about, out there in the ether of cyberspace.  Download the executive summary and see if you’re interested in reading the whole white paper
